Release Deji Adeyanju – Saraki Roars

Bukola Saraki, president of the Senate, has called for the unconditional release of Deji Adeyanju, a political activist arrested.

Adeyanju’s work began when she led a protest that demanded that service chiefs be apolitical, since the next election is to elect their leaders in next year’s general election.

Some service chiefs had attended a political event in honor of President Muhammadu Buhari, who is seeking a second term in office. It was on this basis that he provoked the protest.

Adeyanju was arrested along with his colleagues, they were immediately prosecuted on various charges, he was granted bail and was released after spending eight days behind bars.

Upon being released, he returned to the police, who previously arrested him to retrieve one of his 3 telephones and was arrested again to be tried for a previous case, for which a Kano court had been discharged and acquitted years ago. .

Adeyanju was later imprisoned until February 6, 2019 when the matter could be heard in a higher court.

The top legislator said that Adeyanju’s work was more political than judicial and urged Mr. Buhari to order his release.

Saraki urged the president to free the activist, since keeping him behind bars presented the current government as a government that is intolerant of criticism and represses the views of the opposition, indicating that dictatorial tendencies are becoming widespread in a democratic country .

In a statement by his Special Adviser (Media and Publicity), Yusuph Olaniyonu, the President of the Senate said that the police action indicated a deliberate attempt to remove Adeyanju from circulation.

“The way in which the matter has been handled and the last decision of the Court of First Instance to send the young person in prison until after the conclusion of the 2019 Surveys has presented our democracy in a bad way. “Now we are looking at a country that has retreated to the period of military rule,” Saraki said.

“The president must intervene to find out if Deji Adeyanju’s current problem has anything to do with his views expressed frequently against the Federal Government and why his arrest after leading a protest has now lit all the charges filed against him and if it was true that the charges for which he had been held in prison until February had been tried by the Superior Court.

“It should be noted that before arriving at the office of this government, those of us in the opposition, the APC, freely criticized the government of Goodluck Jonathan and thwarted his actions and statements without any attempt on the part of the administration to suppress the points of opposite view. This government that benefited from this open market of ideas, which is a key principle of a democratic regime, can not offer anything less to our people.

“At this point, President Buhari should not allow the excesses and overzealousness of some security agents to give his government a bad name and that is why I think it should interfere and let the world know the truth about this case. It is obvious that this case is purely political and it is not a legal action. I also ask all human rights groups to address this issue and make sure that we do not look helpless as the rights of a citizen are trampled on, “Saraki added.
